In fact, the digital marketing agency saw a 270% increase in searches related to AI content from February to August 2022. A remarkable 82% of marketers apparently say that AI-generated content is as good as human-written content. The many AI tools currently on the market would certainly lead us to believe so, and the appeal to the average business is understandable – writing regular, quality content is time-consuming and demanding, but with AI, businesses can produce huge amounts of content in little to no time. And while marketers themselves claim they can’t see the difference between AI-written content and specialist-written bespoke material, can Google? And is it worth the cost?

The reality is that Google has definitely declared AI-generated content to be against its webmaster guidelines. Such automatically generated content, regardless of the tools used to create it, is considered spam, resulting in a manual penalty. But what are the chances of getting caught? While it may be true that Google is not (yet) sophisticated enough to reliably differentiate between human-written content and AI content, if Google’s Spam Enforcement Team finds it, it is authorized to take action. This could lead to a drop in ranking.
