TO MEMORIZE: But godliness with contentment is great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6

BIBLICAL READING: 1 TIMOTHY 6:6-12 (KJV)

6. But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7. For we have brought nothing into this world, and it is certain that we cannot take anything away.

8. And having food and clothing, let us be satisfied.

9. But those who want to become rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition.

10. For the love of money is the root of all evil: that while some coveted, they strayed from the faith, and pierced themselves with many sorrows.

11 But thou, man of God, shun these things; and seek justice, piety, faith, love, patience, meekness.

12. Fight the good fight of faith, take hold of eternal life, to which you are also called, and you have professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Money never satisfies those who love it (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12).When you have a Mercedes S-Class, you rejoice. However, the day you see someone with a Rolls Royce, you crave more. In all cases, Ecclesiastes 5:11 says that when the money you have increases, the number of those who will spend it with you will also increase.

Ecclesiastes 5:12 goes further by saying that the people you call poor often enjoy more goods than the rich because nothing disturbs their sleep, whereas the abundance of the rich hardly allows them to rest. Many wealthy people even have trouble eating because they have so much choice.

Some wealthy people will spend several minutes trying to decide what to eat while those of us who are not so wealthy simply thank God for what is available and we eat it with joy. 1 Timothy 6:6-8says godliness with contentment is a great gain. This passage further says that if you have food to eat and clothes to wear, you should be content with it.

No matter the size of your house, you can only sleep in one room at a time. No matter how many cars you have, you can only travel with one at a time. We brought nothing to the world and we will get nothing out of it when we leave. Whatever money or treasures you amass here on earth will be useless when it’s time to leave.

There was a man who was so rich and miserly that he used to go to the market alone to buy food. Whenever his wife cooked her own pot of soup, he took it to his room and locked it away from everyone else. He didn’t trust banks so he kept his money in a room where no one ever entered.

One day he died and his children came home. Upon returning home, they began looking for the key to the room where he kept his money. The youngest says then I know dad, I am sure he must have swallowed the key before he died. So they turned his corpse over, started beating his back, and the key came out of his mouth.

All the riches you pursue will be useless to you one day. Rather than focusing on temporal things, why don’t you set your sights on eternal blessings? (2 Corinthians 4:18). Do not lose eternal treasures because of your focus on material things. Be content with what you have.

PRAYER POINT: Spend your time on earth hoarding treasures in the sky rather than treasures here that will eventually be destroyed.
